Barramundi Fishing & Mud Crabbing

On the mainland adjacent to West Moore Island is an extensive system of mangrove creeks. Balla Balla has a main artery with many smaller tributaries and there are many similar systems to the west on Sherlock Station.

Most of these smaller mangrove creeks are not accessible from land, but are only a short dinghy ride from West Moore Island Lodge. Mangrove creeks are fun to explore and are teaming with bird life and of course are the home of the Mud Crab, Barramundi and Mangrove Jack.

At certain times of the tide crabs can be 'hooked' out of their holes in the side of the bank - great fun and a bit of a challenge, especially when crawling through knee deep mud! For the more genteel we have a dozen drop nets, set up with bait bags and floats, simply run them out along the bank, do a bit of lure casting for Mangrove Jacks amongst the roots and branches while you wait to check the catch.

Barramundi are also plentiful in the creeks but are smart and take a lot of skill to catch - loads of fun and a real contest. Pete Chester, your guide, will help with gear suggestions and tips and will take delight in cooking Barra fillets on the BBQ.
